Not simply because the addition of pro apps represents Apple’s commitment to the platform–though that’s definitely a plus–but also because it has the company taking on new challenges.įinal Cut Pro on the iPad features a new touch interface. The upcoming releases of Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPadOS, however, might actually stir the iPad from this slump. What started as looking toward the future has instead become a remix of the past, and sometimes the remix doesn’t hold up to the original. The last several years of the iPad have overwhelmingly been an era of compromise, of slowly adding in legacy features that Apple had tried to excise in the original iPad: external displays, file management, and windowing. After ten years of trying to move on from the previous decades of point-and-click, the company essentially seemed to throw up its hands and say that it couldn’t do any better. The addition of the Magic Keyboard in 2020 was a significant improvement for the device, but it also represented a concession by Apple that the multitouch interface and onscreen keyboard weren’t always sufficient for the things that people wanted to do. In many ways, Apple seems to have backed off the idea of the iPad as the future of computing. You absolutely can “do work” on an iPad, but it’s depended a lot on what exactly that work entails. But the Mac’s role as a machine for doing nuts-and-bolts work has largely remained unchallenged. There remain places where it’s superior to the Mac–I much prefer it for watching streaming video, playing games, and reading social media. ![]() I can dream, can’t I? But in all seriousness, Final Cut Pro on iPad is the real deal and worth trying out.Over the 13 years of its existence, the iPad has morphed from a bold statement on reinventing the personal computer to a device that excels at some, but not all tasks. ![]() Who knows, perhaps I can become a Big Shot YouTuber thanks to this program. If you own an iPad with an M-series chip, it’s worth checking out the free 30-day trial of Final Cut Pro.Īs for myself, I’m going to continue using Final Cut Pro on iPad to become more acquainted with it. Best of all, this version of Final Cut Pro is more affordable than the $200 version on Macs, at least initially. The simple-to-navigate User Interface and responsive touch controls make editing on an iPad almost as effortless as on a desktop. ![]() Outlookįinal Cut Pro on iPad should make it easier for busy amateur and professional content creators alike to bring their works to life. It’s a testament to the power of Apple’s M-series chips. Regardless, the fact I can export a high-definition video so quickly on a tablet is impressive. The program is also available for the M1-powered iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro 2021, though I’ve not tested Final Cut Pro on those devices to see how fast they render videos. It took about 16 seconds to export the 32-second 4K sample video that came with Final Cut Pro. I used a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with an M2 chip to test Final Cut Pro. ![]()
